Comedians are revered in this country like the comedy bloom of the 80’s in America. There is a really strong scene here that appreciates all different forms of entertainment, as long as it’s smart, edgy, or some combination of the two. There are so many GREAT comedy shows on the BBC like Newswipe (w/ Charlie Brooker, featuring Doug Stanhope), Mock the Week (hosted by Dara O’Briain), Live at the Apollo, and many more. This post will take a look at some of the comedians featured on “Live at the Apollo”. Some notable comedians with flourishing careers in the UK include Rich Hall, Stewart Francis, and Joan Rivers. Some notable canucks making some big splashes on the UK comedy scene are Pete Johansson, Tom Stade, and Glen Wool.
Live at the Apollo (formerly titled Jack Dee Live at the Apollo) is a British stand-up comedy program performed from the Hammersmith Apollo Theatre in west London. Jack Dee hosted the first two seasons and the first episode of the third season before handing it over to a myriad of comics from Joan Rivers to Al Murray. Jack Dee is an incredibly witty stand-up. At the end of the Apollo shows, he answers texts from the audience. Here is a clip of what this man is capable of:

The host of one of the hottest shows on the BBC, Mock the Week, has hosted a few episodes. His name is Dara O’Briain and he’s brilliant. Check him out:
This comedian was on the show ‘Mock the Week’ for a while. He is by far the edgiest comedian I have come across in England. His name is Frankie Boyle, he’s scottish and he’s brilliant. Have a watch and just try to not laugh:
Half of Frankie Boyle’s success is from the media whirlwind he creates every time he thoroughly offends someone (which is often). I imagine his crass content was part of the reason he left the show ‘Mock the Week’. Here is the first in a series of three youtube clips of material that’s too offensive for the BBC. If you like the first, check out the rest:
I’ll be posting more videos on here of British comedy. There is a ridiculous amount of comedy out here. The stand-up headliners typically does 20-25 minutes so it’s much easier for them to build up material and keep it fresh. I love it. To be continued…
