It’s labour day Monday and I’m laying in bed at 11:30am. I’ve been awake since 8:00am. This is one of the beautiful luxuries of having a lap top computer and a carefully placed catheter. I’m kidding! I don’t have a lap top. Snare Snare High Hat!
Bob Odenkirk (if you don’t know) is responsible for some great shows and movies. He was a writer on The Ben Stiller show with Andy Dick, and Janeane Garofolo. He was also a big part of my favourite sketch show (Mr. Show) prior to Tim & Eric Awesome Show, Great Job (which Bob also had a hand and voice in). Mr. Show was an incredibly hilarious sketch show with Bob Odenkirk and David Cross. Each episode ran in a stream of consciousness style not unlike Monty Python’s Flying Circus. Bob is also a big part of some really great and unfortunately underrated movies like “Gone to Prison” and “Brothers Soloman” among others. This clip demonstrates his avant-garde performing style. Just to show you a little more of Bob Odenkirk’s imprint on sketch comedy. He shot a pilot for a sketch show called “Next!” in 2002 that never aired. It featured my favourite current SNL performer – Fred Armisen. Here is a clip that was DELETED from that pilot. That means that this sketch was less funny then whatever else made it into the pilot. I’ve recently become incredibly hooked on Bill Maher’s stand up and his latest show Real Time with Bill Maher. In this sketch Bob Odenkirk plays an incredibly crass God and it is hilarious.
It reminds me of the sermon sketches that Winnipeg’s own David Steinberg’s did on the Smothers Brothers show a long time ago. I’d post a clip, but my online questing has proved fruitless. So, instead, I’ll post up this video of his old stand-up from the 80′s.
What I like best is his uni-brow.
That wraps it up for my Ode to Odenkirk. He is a part of so many great sketch shows that you have to hunt down. I think the Ben Stiller show is f#cking terrible when Ben Stiller is in a sketch, but the rest of the cast are great. Just imdb Bob Odenkirk and download or buy everything he is a part of because I’d bet my first unborn it’ll be great.
